Auto Enrolment or the company pension is going to be one of the biggest problem areas for small and medium business over the next few years.

Each company will be forced by staging dates to offer all employees, even if there is only one of them, a pension; but this can be complicated and difficult.

I have seen some extremely expensive and opportunistic offerings already in the market with the breakdown of the compliance being used as a fear sales tool.  It is true that there are over 70 things you have to check every month to comply and that fines can be awful. You also want to offer your staff a good pension if you possibly can. 

 

So what is the answer?

Well avoid if you possibly can the huge set charges, and enormous ongoing fees. Also be very wary of large management fees of the funds that are under management since this will directly reduce the return you get for the pension.

Finally and most importantly for you, ensure your solution if fully compliant and that people can come and go from the pension as they wish. After all staff are not going to be with you forever!
